Vega Measuring techniques for level measurement 
In continuous level measurement, the instantaneous level at a measuring point is detected and converted into an electronic signal. The level signal is either displayed directly on site or fed into a process control or management system. Liquids, pastes, powders and bulk solids are measured with this method.
Typical applications for continuous level measurement are process tanks, storage tanks, silos or mobile containers in the process industry, e.g. the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, as well as in environmental engineering, water and sewage systems, power generation, metal production and offshore systems.
Every industry places its own very specific demands on measurement technology. VEGA offers many different physical measuring principles for level measurement. It can provide a continuous level sensor perfectly adapted to the properties of the medium as well as the individual process conditions at the measuring point.

 Vega Level measurement with Radar : VEGAPULS Series



In non-contact level measurement with radar, the sensor sends microwave signals towards the medium from above. The surface of the medium reflects the signals back in the direction of the sensor. Using the received microwave signals, the sensor determines the distance to the product surface and calculates the level from it.
The advantages

The measurement is not influenced by temperature, pressure or product properties.

VEGA has been a technology leader in the area of radar level measurement for many years. In almost every industrial process, the levels of liquids, muds, pastes, powders and bulk solids have to be measured continuously in tanks, silos, containers and pipelines. The requirements placed on the measuring instrument are as different as the types of products whose levels must be recorded, no matter whether it’s process water or sewage, food, lye or acid, oil, cement or mining debris. External influences, such as very low or high temperatures, under- or overpressure, vibration or abrasion, are also factors the respective measuring instruments have to cope with when measuring the filling level. Radar sensors from VEGA offer a suitable solution for each of these different applications.

The VEGAPULS sensor emits short radar wave pulses in the direction of the medium. The surface of the medium reflects the radar waves which are then received back by the antenna system of the radar sensor. Finally, the instrument calculates the level from the running time of the radar signals.

Radar sensors for liquids
Two different emission frequencies are available for the level measurement of liquids. The compact, high-frequency K-band sensors VEGAPULS 61, 62 and 63 are particularly suitable for applications in which very high precision is required. Excellent signal focusing is achieved even with small antenna sizes. The low-frequency C-band sensors VEGAPULS 65 and 66, on the other hand, are better able to penetrate foam and strong condensate deposits and are thus suitable for especially difficult process conditions.

Radar sensor for bulk solids
The high-frequency K-band sensors VEGAPULS 67 and 68 are applied for level measurement in bulk solids. Due to the excellent signal focusing, internal silo installations or buildup on the walls have no influence on the measurement. The highly sensitive electronics, especially adapted to the requirements of bulk solids measurement, enables reliable level measurement of widely different products up to 75 m.


  Vega Level measurement with guided Ultrasonic : VEGASON Series

In non-contact ultrasonic level measurement, the sensor emits ultrasonic pulses in the direction of the medium, which then reflects them back.

The elapsed time from emission to reception of the signals is proportional to the level in the tank. Level sensors based on this measuring principle are ideal for simple standard applications, both for liquids and for solids.

Measuring principle : Short ultrasonic impulses in to range of 10 to 70 kHz are emitted by the transducer to the measured product, reflected by the product surface and received again by the transducer. They spread with sound velocity. The time from emission to reception of the signals is proportional to the level in the vessel. The proven ECHOFOX signal processing filters out the correct level echo reliably from a number of false reflections. An adjustment with empty and full vessel is not necessary!

Application in liquids
Sensors with frequencies between 30 and 70 kHz are used for these applications. They operate independent of product properties and are ideal for water/waste water applications and the measurement of slightly corrosive acids and lyes. Also applications in gas-Ex areas can be equipped with these sensors.

Applications in bulk solids
Sensors with frequencies between 10 to 30 kHz are used for these applications. The lower switching frequency enables a considerably better penetration of dusty atmosphere. An adjustment with medium is not necessary. For applications in dust-Ex areas, approved sensors are available.
